Sunday ride to Abingdon and Benson

Sunday, 11 February 2024 - 9:30am

A loop south via Abingdon and Dorchester, mostly flattish with the odd hill here and there to exercise your gears.

Ride report

Cool dry weather with moderate wind and some sunshine provided excellent cycling conditions. 12 riders began with all but 1 going on for lunch in Benson, following a coffee break in Abingdon Market Place. The light reflecting from the extensive flooding we saw provided alternative views of familiar landscapes. On our planned route, the tunnel under the A40 at Fyfield was full of muddy water and the River Thame was flowing fast and deep over Hayward Bridge. Avoiding flooding necessitated 2 diversions and an 8km increase in distance. Thanks to prior warnings from helpful cyclists, we made no U-turns.

The map is an embedded link from Ride with GPS. You can zoom in to see the route in as much detail as you like. For example, you can zoom in (using the + sign) to see exactly where the start is.
