Sunday ride to Arreton, Isle of Wight

Sunday, 19 September 2021 - 9:45am

A return to the Isle of Wight for a clockwise journey following the island cycle route.
Some hills and weather permitting some great coastal views.
Lymington – Yarmouth ferry: https://www.wightlink.co.uk/tickets
Return ferry from Yarmouth 17.05, 18.05, 19.00 depending on stops along the way. There is no time pressure to meet a particular return ferry time as cyclists/pedestrians can ‘walk on’ although you may be needed to select one when booking online. Sunset is just after 19.00, so if you get a later ferry and/or you need to ride a distance after the return ferry, you might need lights.

Ride report

Changes to the ferry timetable left the ride leader with a quandary – make the early start even earlier or make a later return a likelihood – the latter chosen.
Grey skies and spots of rain met our arrival but the weather improved as the day progressed with blue skies and sunshine during the afternoon and a stunning sunset as we got the later ferry back (watching the previous ferry leave just as we approached Yarmouth). The usual route was amended for the non operation of the Cowes chain ferry and again for the new site of the festival in a Newport park we wanted to ride through. Apart from one very busy road, the festival seemed to divert the whole island’s traffic to our choice of alternative route. We mostly stayed on the beautifully surfaced roads round the island cycle route with lovely views and all the usual hills in the usual places! – still not sure which direction we prefer – clockwise or anticlockwise.

The map is an embedded link from Ride with GPS. You can zoom in to see the route in as much detail as you like. For example, you can zoom in (using the + sign) to see exactly where the start is.
