Sunday ride to Bicester and Chearsley
Sunday, 25 February 2024 - 9:30am
A loop NE with a flattish ride to coffee, with the urban delights of Bicester to follow. Lunch in Chearsley, quite hilly in places after coffee.
With all the recent rain running straight off the land, we left Oxford to go to coffee via Kidlington, as the Water Eaton road was deemed to probably be too watery. Coffee was at Bicester Garden Centre, with the chilly weather outside, the bulbs for sale seemed about right, the summer garden furniture perhaps a tad too early! There was a strong north east headwind most of the way to lunch. Other than the head wind, weather was fine, chilly but bright. The Dorton – Chearsley road had the other flood query on my mind, a long down hill with a railway bridge at the bottom followed by an uphill. I had seen water depth markers there in the past. Sure enough, there was water under the bridge even before we got there. Iraj decided to offer to show how deep it was and rode through (almost up to his hubs). The rest of us cautiously walked on some rather ancient and cracked concrete beams that were by the bridge abutment and above the water level (mostly!). Jackie joined us at lunch; the Bell in Chearsley was friendly and efficient with our lunch. After lunch we had tail wind home.
