Sunday ride to Frilford and Wantage

Sunday, 7 January 2024 - 9:30am

A mostly flatish ride around the Vale of the White Horse with lunch in Wantage.

Ride report

There seem to be many differing sorts of cyclists: lycra or baggy shorts?, battery or dynamo lights? derailleur or hub gears? X1 or double? (standard, compact or sub compact?) or triple chainsets? – the list goes on. And I have found another sort. With the risk of flooded roads, I sent an email to those signed up for the ride, saying that while the Abingdon Rd was closed due to flooding, we could get round via Bertie Place, and the approach to East Hanney might be flooded and need a diversion. Result? 4 cancelled their lunch bookings. So I now add to differing types of cyclists, hydophobes or hydrophiles? So it was 8 hydrophiles cyclists met in Broad St, and we circumvented the Abingdon Road closure and still kept our feet dry. We got to Millets Farm with no notable puddles on the road. Unlike one of my 2 flooded rides last year, no one felt the need to go and buy some dry socks during the coffee stop. The route to Wantage was fine, with some shallow puddles over most of the road here and there. Lunch at the Bear Hotel in Wantage was good, if a little noisy. The route back was a bit slower, having a chilly north head wind. The road into East Hanney was dry, but had signs of recent flooding. In Drayton we played safe, and took the road into Abingdon, in case the Sustrans route from Sutton Courtney into Abingdon was flooded. The river in Abingdon was high, just below the road. One section of road was dry but closed, so it probably
had been flooded. So a dry day out in the end, while the hydrophobes missed a chilly but pleasant day out!
