Sunday ride to Wallingford and Checkendon
Sunday, 3 December 2017 - 9:30am
Ride or Event Navigation
A not too hilly route (Garsington excepted) to coffee in Wallingford, followed by a winter wander through the Chilterns beech woods for the usual lunch time rolls at the Black Horse in Checkendon. The route back to Oxford will be fairly hill free, except of course for the descent off the Chiltern Hills.
Ride report
Members weren’t deterred by the murky damp start, nor by the delay to fix an early puncture – the climb into Garsington soon had everyone warmed up again. The quiet road via Drayton St Leonard and the back way into Dorchester made a welcome change from our usual route. The cakes at The Bean and Brew in Wallingford never fail to disappoint. En route to lunch, we noted that the roads at the south end of the Chilterns seem to be getting a lot worse with numerous nasty pot holes. At the Black Horse at Checkendon, we shared the end room with a few mountain bikers and the pub cat. Sausage baguettes lived up to their reputation and as we reached home, the sun actually shone for a moment making the perfect end to this December ride.
