Sunday ride to Watlington
Sunday, 20 December 2020 - 9:30am
A rural ride with only one serious climb at Swyncombe and coffee at the Spire & Spoke pub at Watlington and home via Stadthampton.
We had a lovely ride today in two groups of six, setting off 20 minutes apart and meeting briefly at the coffee shop Spire and Spoke – a really nice place, well set up for cyclists. There is an ingenuous bike holder where you can hook at least 8 bikes by the saddle. Covid arrangements were good, with tables outside and a tipi style tent with spaced out tables. A nicer December day for cycling could not have been asked for with bright blue skies all round, warm weather for this time of year, and the forecast rain in the afternoon did not appear. Once into the Chilterns, the second group reported seeing more bikes than cars, but there was some curiosity as to the activities of certain off-road vehicles with signs around Swyncombe suggesting illegal hare coursing may be a local issue.
The back roads from the bottom of Aston Hill looping into Watlington offered new roads for some riders and our 2 groups caught sight of each other but dutifully kept apart. The extra miles to Watlington were definitely worth it for the hot drinks and excellent home-made cake at the Spire & Spoke pub! We made it back swiftly just before the sky darkened again and opened up…the rainbow effect (two of them) was lovely, but we were glad to be inside by then!
Thanks to everyone who came along on an unexpectedly lovely late December ride.
